A study conducted by “Which?” examined 22,289 reports from the European Environment Agency (EEA) on bathing water quality and the number of beaches in each country that were rated as “excellent” or “poor” quality.

While the overall picture is good – 96% of beaches across the European Union (EU) meet minimum quality standards – in one country, only 16% of bathing sites were rated as “excellent”. Despite this country being compared to the Maldives and its popularity growing rapidly in recent years due to its alluring white sandy beaches, it lagged significantly behind other countries in the results.
