M. Fedorov lost his position as Minister of Defense on July 16, having served only half a year in this role. His dismissal sparked protests in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, which is a rare phenomenon during the war. The resignation occurred at a time when attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Russian oil infrastructure and military logistics noticeably intensified.
M. Fedorov himself said he had fundamental disagreements with the country’s leadership over personnel issues: he proposed replacing the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov, but the president did not support this initiative. After M. Fedorov’s resignation, V. Zelensky appointed the head of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), Yevhen Khmara, to lead the Ministry of Defense.
