Compare prices in different retail chains: a clear difference between shopping baskets

Comparing the average prices of shopping baskets purchased during the study on July 9, it turned out that in the “Lidl” retail chain it was 32.74 euros, in “Rimi” – 34.94 euros, in “Maxima” – 35.93 euros, in “Norfa” – 36.61 euros, and in “Iki” – 37.90 euros.

During the study conducted on July 9, “SeeNext” secret shoppers visited stores of the five largest retail chains in Vilnius and Kaunas – “Iki”, “Lidl”, “Maxima XX”, “Norfa XL”, and “Rimi Hyper”. A basket of 27 cheapest frequently used products was chosen for shopping. It consisted of selected products from different food categories: dairy, meat, grain-based, grocery products, fruits, vegetables, and drinks.

The most significant price differences – in three product groups

The results of the study show that dairy products were cheapest in the “Rimi” retail chain – 6.31 euros, and most expensive in the “Iki” retail chain – 7.45 euros. The price difference between them was 1.14 euros.

The lowest price for meat products was recorded in the “Lidl” retail chain – 13.28 euros. The highest price for meat products was most notable in the “Iki” retail chain basket, where it reached 16.35 euros. The difference between the highest and lowest price was 3.07 euros.

Grain-based products were cheapest in the “Lidl” and “Norfa” retail chains – 3.82 euros each, and most expensive in the “Rimi” retail chain, where the price for this product group was 3.89 euros. The difference between the highest and lowest price was 0.07 euros.

The lowest price for fruits and vegetables was recorded in the “Rimi” retail chain – 3.77 euros, and the highest – in the “Iki” retail chain – 4.41 euros. The difference between the highest and lowest price was 0.64 euros.

The lowest price for drinks – still mineral water and non-alcoholic beer – was noticed in the “Maxima” retail chain – 0.84 euros. The highest price for these drinks was paid in the “Iki” retail chain – 0.98 euros. The difference between the highest and lowest price was 0.14 euros.

For the remaining basket products – dark chocolate, white sugar, sunflower oil, and cage-free chicken eggs – the lowest price was recorded in the “Lidl” retail chain – 4.58 euros, and the highest – in the “Norfa” retail chain – 5.84 euros. The difference between the highest and lowest price was 1.26 euros.
