Firefighters immediately called the Special Mountain Actions Group (GRAE) helicopter. Assistance was provided by a doctor from the Medical Assistance System (SEM) and three ground rescue teams.
Two victims were cooling off in one of the deep natural hot spring pools when several stones fell from one of the canyon walls and hit them. Since this area is nestled between mountains, falling rocks pose the greatest danger in such an environment, especially when human activity intensifies here. Medics were unable to save the girl’s life, but rescue teams managed to free the injured person.

The seriously injured woman was airlifted by helicopter to the University Hospital of Tarragona; prior to that, she was given first aid on site, where she was transferred – to the local football field. Officers from the regional police mountain rescue unit, assisted by the helicopter crew, transported the body of the deceased after the investigation team gave permission.
The local authorities issued a statement expressing “deepest condolences and full support to the family and relatives during these difficult moments.” Authorities declared two days of mourning. The 24-year-old woman is in serious condition in the hospital. Her and the nine-year-old girl’s nationality has not yet been disclosed; it is also unknown whether they were relatives. Security experts remind people to assess the risk when resting under rocks or swimming in natural water bodies in mountainous areas.
