According to the previous agreement, the 65-year-old specialist’s contract was supposed to end in 2028.
The coach who took over the Spanish national team in 2022 led this team to triumph at the European Championships two years ago, and last summer won the world championship with them.

By extending the contract, L. de la Fuente ensured that he will coach the Spaniards not only during the 2028 and 2032 European Championships but also during the 2030 world championships, one of the hosts of which will be Spain itself.
In the four years that L. de la Fuente has been at the helm of Spain, his team has lost only two out of 41 official matches. Besides the already mentioned trophies, the Spaniards won the UEFA Nations League in 2023 and lost to Portugal in the final of this tournament last year.

Before coaching the men’s national team, L. de la Fuente worked for nine years with Spain’s youth national teams. He won the European Championships with the country’s under-19s (2015) and under-21s (2019), and in 2021 he also won an Olympic silver medal at the Tokyo Games.
