Klaipėda police are investigating what prompted a young man to suddenly attack and beat a much older stranger who was quietly spending time in a bar in the city center.
A passerby suddenly attacked and tried to beat a man in the bar.
The violent crime took place on the pedestrian alley of Martynas Mažvydas in the port city center on the evening of Wednesday (August 5).
At that time, many Klaipėda residents and city guests were spending the warm evening in outdoor cafes.
The commotion in the alley started before 9 p.m. – a passerby suddenly attacked and tried to beat a man who was in the bar.
The man managed to step back and soon the attacker left.
The attacked man told bystanders that he did not know why he was targeted, as he did not know the aggressive person and had no conflict with him. After the excitement subsided, the man continued to spend time in the outdoor cafe.
However, just before 9 p.m., the mentioned attacker suddenly appeared from around the corner of the building and rushed into the cafe.
He attacked the unsuspecting man from behind and punched him in the head.
It is unclear how things would have ended if not for the quick reaction of other bar customers.
Several men jumped up from their chairs, caught the attacker, and laid him on the ground.
While the attacked man called the police, the aggressive person who did not want to calm down was turned onto his stomach and tied up with an electric extension cord taken from the bar.

Officers arrived at the scene within minutes – two police units arrived one after another.
The suspect was handcuffed, untied, and taken to the Klaipėda County Police Headquarters.
The injured man repeated to the patrol officers that he did not know why he was attacked by a stranger.
According to the data from the Operational Management Department of the Klaipėda County Police Headquarters, a 25-year-old man hit a 41-year-old man in the bar.
People who witnessed the incident suspected that the attacker might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Whether the young man was intoxicated is not detailed by law enforcement. The possibility of mental health issues is not excluded.
The suspect was not placed in custody; he was issued a summons to appear for questioning at the police station.
According to the Klaipėda County Police Headquarters, the circumstances of the incident are being clarified.
