Early Monday evening, officers of the Kalvarija border post of the Varėna border unit of VSAT, conducting prevention and control of illegal migration, stopped a “Peugeot 308” car for inspection on the road near Kalnių village (Kalvarija municipality), just a few kilometers from the state border with Poland.
The station wagon with Polish license plates was driven by a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, and three young foreigners were sitting on the back seat.
It turned out that these passengers were citizens of Eritrea, a small North African country, aged 23 and two aged 24. They did not have documents granting the right to enter and stay in the territory of Lithuania.
Border guards established that this trio had illegally left the Reception and Integration Agency (PIIA) Vilnius reception center, subordinate to the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, and, with the help of the Ukrainian, tried to reach one of the Western European countries.
Border guards detained the driver and the illegal migrants he was transporting and brought them to the border post.
A pre-trial investigation has been initiated at the Varėna border unit of VSAT for illegal transportation of people across the state border for selfish purposes, led by a prosecutor from the 2nd Criminal Prosecution Division of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office.
For such a criminal act, the law provides for a fine or imprisonment for up to eight years.
The Eritrean citizens were temporarily accommodated in one of the units of the Varėna border unit of VSAT. They will be returned to the PIIA Vilnius reception center in the near future.
After questioning the Ukrainian who transported the illegal migrants, a decision will be made on Wednesday regarding the preventive measure to be applied to him.
