The 23-time Grand Slam champion is undoubtedly one of the brightest in history, but she still lacks one Grand Slam title to reach Margaret Court’s record.
For most of her career, Serena held the world No. 1 ranking, and currently, four-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka enjoys this honor.
At the Fanatics Fest event in Manhattan, S. Williams showered praise on 28-year-old A. Sabalenka; however, she pointed out one thing the Belarusian can do that she herself “was not allowed” to do on court.
“A. Sabalenka is number one. She’s so fiery. You know, she really gives it her all when she’s on court. I recognize myself in that behavior. That’s why I really like her. I really like that about her character. She’s just like that – when she loses, she gets furious. I wasn’t allowed to express my anger, but I really like that she’s allowed to vent her emotions. I really like that.”

Throughout her career, S. Williams indeed faced criticism for not always controlling her emotions, especially in the 2018 US Open final against Naomi Osaka, when a heated dispute with the umpire escalated into a series of rule violations.
A. Sabalenka has also had several outbursts of anger during her career, the most memorable being smashing her racket into a towel box during a US Open semifinal.
Now, the 28-year-old tennis player will head to the US Open – the last Grand Slam tournament of this season – aiming to lift the trophy for the third consecutive year.
