Argentina failed to make a single shot on goal during regular time, but committed as many as 19 fouls, and another six during extra time.
However, the Argentinians shocked most with their behavior after the final whistle. One of the instigators of the brawl was assistant coach Roberto Ayala. The legendary defender, who played 115 matches for the national team between 1994 and 2007, pushed Dani Olmo. Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, among others, also got physical.
A few days after the final, R. Ayala publicly apologized. “Of course, I apologize. Due to my position, I cannot allow my feelings or what is happening around me to affect my mood or actions. (…) It was more of a push than anything else. It wasn’t a punch, as some say. It was a reaction to his words, but that’s all. If I meet him, of course, I will apologize to him personally,” said R. Ayala.

However, these statements did not soften Dani Olmo’s heart. The Spaniard declared that he did not accept the apology.
“He who says he regrets but justifies his blow as a response to another’s words probably feels no true remorse at all and does not speak what he feels. We are defined not by the mistakes we make, but by the courage to humbly acknowledge them,” D. Olmo is quoted by the website klix.ba.
The Barcelona player also described what motivates him every time he steps onto the field: “When my children, family, fans, and the residents of my hometown Terrassa watch the matches, I want them to be proud of how we fight and win, but above all – our behavior. As footballers, we are an example for children, for future generations. This means great responsibility.”
