NVSC warns about children's summer camps: do parents know this?

Please note that a permit-hygiene passport is not issued for children’s recreational camp activities. However, camp organizers must ensure conditions that meet the requirements of the Lithuanian hygiene standard HN 79:2010 “Children’s recreational camp. General health safety requirements.” These requirements apply to camps where children are accommodated; they do not apply to day camps.

Employees ensuring children’s safety

Responsible and prepared staff who have checked their health and completed first aid and hygiene skills courses before accepting campers are very important for children’s well-being and safety at the camp. It is also necessary to ensure that a first aid kit is available in a well-visible place in case help is needed.

Rest within the camp area

Children spend most of their leisure time outdoors, so it is especially important that the camp area is safe and tidy. All equipment on the premises must be reliable and in good condition, and the playgrounds and rest areas must provide opportunities for children to shelter from direct sunlight or precipitation. It is also important to ensure that the main entrances to the camp and pedestrian paths are properly lit during dark hours.

Safe swimming

Swimming is one of the most enjoyable summer activities, but when enjoying water pleasures, it is important not to forget safety requirements. Before the camp starts, microbiological tests of the swimming area water must be carried out. It is also important to ensure that access to the water is safe – non-slip and not muddy. The bottom of the swimming area should be clean, free of stones or holes, and the water surface should not be overgrown with algae. Attention is drawn to the fact that water bodies not used for children’s swimming must be fenced off.

Accommodation requirements

Proper living conditions at the camp help children rest better, feel cozy and safe. Therefore, living rooms, toilets, washrooms, and shower rooms are arranged separately for girls and boys. No more than 10 places should be arranged in the bedroom for children under 10 years old and no more than 5 places for older children. Also, each child must have furniture or space for storing personal belongings and clothes.

According to established requirements, all sanitary facilities must be operational and technically sound. The toilet and washroom must have personal hygiene products, and each child must be provided with a bed, pillow, blanket, bed linen, and at least 2 towels. Equipment and furniture must be safe and tidy.

Fresh air and a proper microclimate help children rest better and feel comfortable. Therefore, bedrooms and other educational rooms need to be naturally ventilated, and the temperature maintained at 18–28 °C.

If you notice that children’s recreation at the camp is organized in an environment that does not meet the requirements, first report it to the camp organizers. If the comments are not addressed, report possible violations to the NVSC.
