“Companies today are looking for various ways to reduce their environmental impact and invest in different technologies. We see that alongside electric vehicles, there is also interest in other alternative solutions. One such example is the acquisition of the hydrogen-powered car Toyota Mirai, financed by Luminor bank, by the strategic energy infrastructure projects company MT Group.
Although hydrogen-powered transport in Lithuania is still taking its first steps, we believe that over time it will find its place in the sustainable mobility ecosystem,” says D. Mockė.
From hydrogen infrastructure to everyday use
MT Group, which acquired the hydrogen-powered car and belongs to the Zakaras Holding group of companies, calls this decision a natural continuation of its activities. Since 2008, the company has been implementing strategic energy and industrial infrastructure projects in Lithuania and Europe, and in recent years has been actively working in the field of renewable energy – developing hydrogen, biogas, offshore wind power, and carbon dioxide capture projects.
“In carrying out these projects, we used the most advanced technologies that ensure maximum plant capacities and meet the strictest safety and quality requirements. Hydrogen with a purity of at least 99.99% will become an important alternative fuel for various types of transport, including private. The acquisition of Toyota Mirai is a consistent step on our own transformation path,” says Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group.
The hydrogen economy in Lithuania is just gaining momentum
The European Union has set a goal to ensure at least 42.5% of consumed energy from renewable energy sources by 2030, and to achieve a climate-neutral economy by 2050. One of the technologies that can contribute to achieving these goals is green hydrogen, especially in the heavy transport and industrial sectors.
However, faster development of hydrogen transport depends not only on technological progress but also on infrastructure. Currently, the first green hydrogen plants are being built in Vilnius and Klaipėda, and the capital has ordered 16 hydrogen-powered city buses. Experts assess that the further development of this technology will be determined by both the expansion of refueling infrastructure and consistent state incentive measures.
