Harald V ascended the throne in 1991 and was the oldest king in Europe. After his death, a national mourning period was declared, which will last until the day of the funeral.
The king was a passionate sailor. He participated in three Olympic Games – Tokyo (1964), Mexico City (1968), and Munich (1972). In Japan, he was the flag bearer for Norway.
In 1994, he opened the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The Olympic flame was then lit by his son, the heir to the throne Haakon, who became the new king of Norway after his father’s death.

Harald V was very loved by Norwegians. A 2022 survey showed that 84% of the population supported the royal family.
“This is incredibly sad news. I was lucky to meet the king several times. He was a man I respected and admired,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in an interview with the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, describing the late monarch.
During his career, O.G. Solskjaer played 67 matches for the Norwegian national team. He is best known for an 11-year period at Manchester United. After retiring, he became a coach and led his former teams – Molde and Manchester United, as well as Cardiff City and Istanbul’s Beşiktaş.
