Lithuanian border guards who went to help Latvian colleagues have once again distinguished themselves. On the last night of this summer, a cynologist with a service dog detained five foreigners who had illegally crossed the Belarus-Latvia state border.

On Tuesday night, after an illegal state border crossing was recorded, a small group of Lithuanian border guards, including a cynologist with a service dog, hurried to the scene. Latvian officers were already waiting for them there.
At a road intersection, the fugitives’ personal belongings were scattered – a backpack, caps, water bottles. The cynologist began the search from these items. After sniffing these belongings, the four-year-old German Shepherd quickly found a trail and decisively ran into the forest deep into Latvian territory. Three Latvian border guards followed them along with the cynologist.
Just a kilometer away, in a marshy area, Aja found a group of five foreign men who unsuccessfully tried to remain unnoticed. The illegal migrants were escorted to the nearest road and detained.
As in previous cases, the search for border violators took place under difficult conditions, in a forested and marshy area, but fortunately, it did not take long.
Already the fifth group of VSAT officers working in the neighboring country is deployed in one of the most challenging sections of the state border – in the Silene border guard district near Daugavpils.

Lithuanian border guards travel to Latvia in their service vehicles, with their equipment and weapons. Expenses are covered by Lithuanian VSAT funds.
Since August 26, to help manage the tense situation at the border with Belarus, the fifth group of Lithuanian border guards has been working in Latvia this year, replacing VSAT officers who worked on a two-week assistance mission in the neighboring country. The group consists of 20 VSAT officers from the Pagėgiai and Coastal Border Protection Units, including four cynologists with service dogs. The first two groups were smaller, with 9 border guards each.
Lithuanian border guards travel to Latvia in their service vehicles with their equipment and weapons. Expenses related to this mission are covered by Lithuanian VSAT funds.
It is planned that these border guards, like the VSAT officers who previously helped the Latvians, will work in Latvia for two weeks. Later, decisions regarding such assistance will be made depending on the situation at the neighbors’ border with Belarus.
