“The prepared document adjusts the construction zone and construction boundary, planning to build a commercial building,” states the document published by Klaipėda municipality on July 30.

It names the land plot owner – the construction company “TK105” registered in Vilnius. According to the Register Center data, this is the same company that in 2024 acquired the former cinema building and land – “DIFF Estate” – at an initial auction price of 789.3 thousand euros, later changing its name.

This company is indirectly controlled by the Šiauliai construction company “Eriadas.”

The news portal VE.lt recently reported that a permit was issued to demolish the former cinema building at Taikos avenue 105.

The detailed plan corrections confirmed the future construction boundary, the layout of parking spaces, and add an additional entrance to the plot, which covers 57 ares.

“With the correction, the construction zone boundaries are expanded, but this change does not affect the indicators of the valid detailed plan. Although visually the construction zone increases, the actual land plot building density will not exceed the established maximum allowable indicator,” the document states.

According to it, the new object will not burden traffic at the nearby intersection: “With the existing infrastructure, the planned new commercial object should not have a significant negative impact on the current traffic flow near the intersection of Taikos avenue and Naujakiemis street.”

It is also indicated that the concrete composition “Jūratė and Kastytis” created by sculptor Gintautas Jankus on the plot must be preserved by providing a suitable place for it.

In the current 1,500 square meter building, the cinema operated from February 1977, “Jūratė and Kastytis” was the only cinema south of Baltic avenue, with over 600 seats in its two halls.

It is stated that the biggest blow to “Jūratė and Kastytis” was dealt by the modernization of the “Žemaitija” cinema, later by the operation of a modern cinema located in “Akropolis.” In 2008, the cinema temporarily resumed operations, but due to high maintenance costs and insufficient audience numbers, it had to be closed again.

For a while, the cinema premises housed a nightclub, casino, billiard hall, household appliances were sold, private film screenings, events, and seminars were held. In 2012, the cinema equipment was moved to the “Naglis” cinema in Palanga.
