As 15min stated, Ernesta Vareikytė, head of media relations at “Maxima”, after investigations by VMVT, the supplier UAB “Samsonas” supplied the brand “Well Done” product – sliced cold-smoked pork loin, 100 g – was found to contain the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. She emphasized that this product has not been available for sale since August 4.

“A total of 2222 units of this product were delivered to “Maxima” stores. On August 4, the product was removed from sale during internal quality control, so when the VMVT decision was received, only 12 units remained in stores – they were seized and not sold to customers.

After receiving the VMVT decision, we began recalling the product from customers and are taking all planned customer notification actions. Information about the recalled product is posted in “Maxima” stores,” she commented.

According to E. Vareikytė, customers who still have this product at home are asked not to consume it and to return it to any “Maxima” store.

“Customers will be refunded for the returned product. The product should be brought to any “Maxima” store along with the purchase receipt or other proof of purchase. You can also contact our customer service department by toll-free phone +370 800 200 50 or by email at klientai@maxima.lt. When contacting by email, we will ask you to send photos of the product and proof of purchase,” she added.

E. Vareikytė emphasized that customer safety and the quality of products sold are priorities, so in such cases, all planned actions to immediately remove unsafe products from the market, recall them, and inform customers are taken.

The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) reminds that Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most dangerous food bacteria. Unlike many other disease-causing microorganisms, listeria is incredibly resilient – it can successfully live and even multiply at low temperatures (for example, in the refrigerator), in environments lacking oxygen (vacuum-packed), or in high salt concentrations.

This bacterium causes listeriosis – a very serious disease that poses particular risks to the most vulnerable groups in society: infants and young children, pregnant women, elderly people (over 65 years), and individuals with weakened immune systems (for example, those with cancer).

Scientific data show that much smaller amounts of bacteria in food are enough to cause illness in these vulnerable groups. That is why the new rules (Regulation (EU) 2024/2895) are aimed at maximum risk management throughout the food chain – from the production company to our table.

How should consumers act?

Although food producers and control authorities strive to ensure food safety, it is impossible to check every product on the market, so consumers themselves play an important role in ensuring safe food consumption. Specialists recommend always paying attention to food packaging, following the specified storage conditions and temperature regime, not exceeding the indicated “use by” date, and strictly following preparation instructions if thermal processing is recommended before consumption.

You can check and monitor in real time whether there are unsafe products in your refrigerator and home by consulting the continuously updated bulletin on unsafe food products, which you can find here.
