Mid-August in southern Poland suddenly turned almost into winter. Numerous videos are posted on social networks showing how hail covered yards and streets in the city of Chorzów in the southern part of the country. The ice chunks were indeed impressively large.

One of the posts is from Sławomir Kordela, a member of the Chorzów city council. The ice is smashing a private house yard.

Many comments appeared under the post, people shared their experiences and showed what kind of hail fell in their places of residence.

According to one commenter, Izabela Z., in Old Chorzów all cars parked outdoors were damaged, and in some places even rear window glass was shattered.

Other photos show punctured outdoor furniture and completely destroyed outdoor plants in yards.

Similar scenes are abundant in other social media groups as well.

The meteorologists themselves joke – winter caught the road workers by surprise again.

The Chorzów city municipality also shares information that the hail and rains that passed through the city caused quite a lot of trouble. The ice damaged cars and items in yards, so the streets turned white and green due to fallen branches and trees.

According to tvn24.pl, storms traveled across part of Poland in a band from the Lubusz and Lower Silesian voivodeships to Podlaskie. It rained – heavier in some places, calmer in others, with hail falling in some areas, with ice chunks averaging 3-5 centimeters in diameter. Strong, gusty winds blew.

So firefighters and rescuers had no shortage of work – more than 1120 reports were received in the past 24 hours, mostly in the Silesian, Lower Silesian, and Lesser Poland voivodeships. Assistance was also needed by residents of Łódź, Opole, Poznań, Warsaw, and Kielce.

On Tuesday night, most calls were in Warsaw, where heavy rains flooded streets and yards.

Warsaw residents themselves were already sadly joking in the evening that they would have to look for boats in the morning to get to work. Especially if they need to travel on the S8 road and its tunnels, which reportedly flood during every heavy rain.

The scene in Nysa in southwestern Poland is even worse – water flows there like a wide but powerful river.

In Silesia, firefighters had to remove trees fallen on roads and also help residents whose roofs were torn off by winds. Several dozen such cases were recorded.
