Faster internet in the dormitory without complicated solutions: expert advice

Connection quality can be affected by the building’s structure, the modem’s location, its age, and how many devices are connected to it at the same time. Tele2 innovation expert Arnoldas Lukošius advises what should be checked first and what simple solutions can help ensure a more stable connection in a dormitory.

When a stronger and personal connection is needed

Tele2 innovation expert Arnoldas Lukošius says it is first worth checking the simplest things. For example, if the existing shared network is not enough for remote learning, work, gaming, or multiple devices used simultaneously, a personal mobile internet modem can be considered. If a separate modem is used, it should be placed in an open area, closer to the window, and not blocked by objects. Sometimes even a small change in location can noticeably improve connection quality.

A separate modem provides more control – you can choose the most suitable place for it, manage connected devices, and not depend on the shared network load. Modern modems do not take up much space, look nice, and do not require complicated setup – just plug the cable into the socket,” says the Tele2 expert.

When it is worth upgrading the modem

Connection quality can also be affected by the age of the equipment used. An older modem may not support newer connection technologies, handle a larger number of connected devices poorly, or not utilize all the features of the chosen plan.

According to A. Lukošius, it is worth considering upgrading the modem if it has been used for several years and the connection becomes unstable even with a good signal. In such a case, upgrading the equipment can be a simpler solution than constantly searching for connection disruptions.

“In recent years, technology has improved significantly, 5G connection has expanded, and operators use more frequencies for it. It is very important that the modem’s specifications allow taking advantage of all these benefits. A new modem can completely change the experience,” says A. Lukošius.

So that the whole floor does not use the internet

When moving in, it is important not to forget about security. An easily guessable password, such as a room number or name, can quickly become known to neighbors. It is worth enabling two-factor authentication for important accounts and regularly installing updates on devices. An additional layer of protection can be the Internet protection service provided by the operator. Tele2’s solution works at the network level and can warn about potentially malicious websites, so there is no need to install a separate app on the device.

“In dormitories, passwords are often passed from hand to hand, so after some time it can be difficult to understand how many people are actually using the same network. The password should be long, unique, and not related to personal information. If unknown devices are noticed connecting, the password should be changed immediately,” says A. Lukošius.

It is also worth changing the router’s factory administrator password. If the device has a guest network function, it can be enabled for friends – this way the main network remains reserved only for the room’s residents.

“A few simple steps – proper modem placement, a strong password, and additional security measures – can help avoid both connection interruptions and unpleasant cyber risks,” summarizes the Tele2 expert.
