As shown by a 2020 study published in the journal “JAMA Network Open,” the average American has sex about once a week, according to “The Healthy.” Another survey shows that about 4% of people have sex daily, but does more frequent sex provide any benefits?

How often should you have sex? “The answer depends on what is acceptable and comfortable for people,” says Michelle DiBlasi, head of the inpatient psychiatry department at Tufts Medical Center. “It is safe to have sex daily or even several times a day. However, it is completely normal not to have sex that often.”
According to her, studies show that the happiness level of people who have sex daily is the same as those who have sex once a week or less. For example, a 2017 study published in the journal “Archives of Sexual Behavior” revealed that 15% of men and 26% of women did not have sex that year but reported feeling the same level of happiness as sexually active people.
What happens when you have sex frequently?
According to Dr. M. DiBlasi, the biggest benefit of frequent sexual intercourse is a reduced level of cortisol in the body. “This is a hormone released when experiencing stress, so sex helps reduce stress levels, provides a sense of calm, and can improve sleep quality.”
Additionally, endorphins are released in the brain during sexual intercourse. These happiness hormones are natural compounds in the body that relieve pain and improve mood. Another benefit of regular sex is a strengthened bond with your partner. This happens because oxytocin—a hormone that helps create emotional connections with others—is produced during sex.
“It is also great that after sex—or even just after close physical contact and hugging—oxytocin can remain in the body for up to two days,” says Dr. M. DiBlasi.

A 2022 study published in the “European Journal of Preventive Cardiology” shows that sexual intercourse can help extend lifespan. It was found that people who have sex at least once a week have a 10–21% lower risk of death from heart disease, a 44–49% reduction in mortality from other causes (unrelated to heart disease), and a 69% reduction in cancer mortality.
Am I having sex too often?
According to Dr. M. DiBlasi, daily sex can be beneficial to some people’s health, while for others it may cause problems. For example, if you do not want to have sex but feel pressure from your partner, you will not experience the positive effects of sex—and it may negatively affect your mental health and relationship.
She adds that frequent sex increases the risk of certain physical problems: “Pain or skin chafing may occur, as well as an increased likelihood of contracting certain infections, such as urinary tract infections.”
Ultimately, the appropriate frequency of sex depends on what is most comfortable and satisfying for you and your partner. “The best way is to discuss each other’s needs and always be honest and open,” says Dr. M. DiBlasi. “Start the conversation by saying that it is important to you and that you want to know your partner’s opinion and what suits them best; this way, you will find a compromise that best meets the needs of your relationship.”
