In the quarterfinals of the “Mubadala DC Open” tournament, Taylor Fritz (ATP-10) managed to save himself. He defeated his compatriot Alex Michelsen (ATP-40) with a score of 6:1, 3:6, 7:6(6) and reached the second semifinal of his career in Washington.
At the beginning of the third set, T. Fritz had to stop playing due to pain in his left knee, but after a medical timeout, he was able to continue the match.
“Now it seems that everything is fine,” the tennis player said after the encounter. “The same situation happened this year in Dallas, when I kind of twisted my knee and felt a very sharp pain. Very strange, but after a few games the pain completely disappears. After about four games, I felt nothing today as well.”
Already next Monday, the 28-year-old tennis player will be able to call himself the best American again – in the ATP ranking, he will surpass Ben Shelton (ATP-8), whose run in Washington ended in the quarterfinals.

Ben Shelton, who was stuck in the US capital all week, finally lost 6:4, 5:7, 4:6 to Chilean representative Alejandro Tabilo (ATP-30).
The South American tennis player reached the ATP tournament semifinal for the 11th time in his career, but only the fourth time defeated a Top 10 opponent – two of his past victories were against Novak Djokovic himself.
A. Tabilo will play against Rafael Jodar (ATP-24) in the semifinal stage, while T. Fritz will face Brandon Nakashima (ATP-33).
