Consumption peak – in June
Water consumption grew every month during the first half of this year. On average, about 2.7 million cubic meters of water were consumed monthly in the capital during the first half of this year. This amount of water would fill more than a thousand Olympic-sized swimming pools each month.

The largest jump in water consumption was recorded this June, when record heat was observed in Lithuania – consumption during this month exceeded 2.8 million cubic meters and was 14% higher than the same period in previous years.
Analyzing water extraction data in Vilnius, it is seen that the peak of water extraction was reached during the last three days of the month, averaging about 114 thousand cubic meters per day.
“The overall water demand in the capital is increased not only by heat waves but also by the growing city – the number of residents, new homes, businesses, and industrial enterprises is increasing,” says Viktoras Matonis, Director of the Production Department at “Vilniaus vandenys.”
According to V. Matonis, although water demand in the capital is steadily growing, there is no threat of resource depletion. Vilnius is one of the few European capitals supplying drinking water from deep underground water layers. Water is extracted from wells 40–245 meters deep, so it is naturally protected from surface pollution and has very high quality.
“Vilnius can be proud of abundant drinking water resources. Although we have enough water resources today – they must be protected, and each of our actions and choices create a sustainable tomorrow. Therefore, we feel the duty to remind that a safe future depends on all of us having a responsible attitude towards wastewater management, pollution reduction, and everyday sustainable choices, such as not throwing waste into the sewage, not pouring fats and other pollutants,” emphasizes V. Matonis.
