On Wednesday morning, officers of the Kabeliai border post of the VSAT Varėna border unit detected by technical means based on ground surface vibrations that an underground tunnel might be being dug near the village of Piesčiai (Varėna district) from the Belarusian side.

With the help of colleagues experienced in this field, specialists from the Podlaskie section of the Polish State Border Guard, who brought special equipment for tunnel search, a cavity was drilled on the patrol route. An underground channel dug from the Belarusian side was discovered.
Using an excavator, digging work was carried out, after which a tunnel was found at a depth of about 1.5 m, with a diameter of about 1 m. The tunnel extended from the depths of Belarusian territory about 5 m from the border line into the depths of Lithuanian territory. It had no exit opening into Lithuanian territory, so illegal migrants or other persons had no opportunity to enter our country through this tunnel.
A pre-trial investigation has been initiated at the VSAT Varėna border unit for illegal crossing of the state border, led by a prosecutor from the Alytus district prosecutor’s office of the Kaunas regional prosecutor’s office. Such a criminal act is punishable by a fine, arrest, or imprisonment for up to two years under the law.
After procedural pre-trial investigation actions, the tunnel leading from Belarus was filled in.
