Last Monday, police officers received a call from a mushroom picker. The man said he was lost in the forest near Klaipėda and could not find a way out. He also said that his dog had found something suspicious, thinking it could be a human body.

As he later told the officers, from a distance it looked like a pile of rags had been thrown in a damp part of the forest. However, the dog accompanying the mushroom picker was restless and kept pulling closer. When the man approached, he saw a badly decomposed body.
At about 10:30 a.m., Klaipėda officers received a call about a gruesome discovery in the Lūžgaliai forest. The person indicated an approximate location where the body should be searched for.
The search took several hours. It turned out that reaching the deceased was not so easy. In some places, it was necessary to wade through water in the peat soil.
Only in the evening did the deceased’s relatives receive a call that a body found in the forest might be the 80-year-old man they were looking for.
The remains were identified only by the watch and dental prosthesis. As the deceased’s daughter Rasa told 15min, the body was almost in the water. The man’s shoes were gone, and the soaked clothes were unrecognizable.

Antanas, aged 80, had been missing since June 14. As relatives said then, the hard-of-hearing elderly man was spending the summer with his wife in the garden in Dercekli.
Grandmother was cooking and soon noticed that her husband was no longer seen in the yard. The police were contacted, and volunteers helped search for the man. However, the search was fruitless.
It is now clear that the last stop for the man was the forest, several kilometers away from home. This place is quite difficult to access, confusing, and the search participants had not checked it.
“The officers who searched for him, even after receiving approximate coordinates themselves, wandered for several hours and were stuck up to their knees,” Rasa said.
The exact cause of the elderly man’s death will be revealed after a thorough examination.
