“Last year was very bad. But this year is even worse. I had a meeting with garden and berry farms. Now we have a question of how much harvest will not be – now we have another column of how many trees will need to be replanted,” the minister said this week in the Seimas’s Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and Christian Families Union faction.

“The most important thing is that the ‘Auksio’ trees, those adapted to Lithuanian natural conditions, froze. There was a lot of snow, it covered the ground and prevented it from freezing, and the roots supplied water, it froze at the top, and the bark there,” A. Palionis added.

According to him, for example, in the Naradava farm, 35 hectares out of 272 hectares of orchards may need to be replanted.

“Now we will wait, because usually a tree sprouts, bears fruit, and then withers. So we need to wait until St. John’s Day,” said A. Palionis.

The minister stated that municipalities are recommended to visit orchard farms with specialists from the Lithuanian Centre for Agrarian and Forest Sciences to assess the level of tree mortality.
