The funds will be allocated under the Defense Production Act, adopted in 1950, which grants the US President emergency powers over the country’s industry.
“Today, we are taking historic action to lower energy costs and the cost of living for all Americans by harnessing the power of clean, wonderful coal,” D. Trump said.
The US President often calls human-caused climate change a “hoax” and, since returning to the White House last year, has been working to repeal many environmental regulations, many of which restricted the use of fossil fuels.
Coal is a fuel that emits the largest amount of greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright described coal as “a critically important source of our electricity” and praised D. Trump’s support for this fuel.

“Seventeen coal power plants were not shut down in 2025 because President D. Trump is sitting at this table,” he said, and D. Trump smiled upon hearing these praises. “President D. Trump is a president with the courage and determination to defend an industry that has been slandered for too long and to recognize its importance.”
A 2023 Harvard University study showed that exposure to fine particulate matter emitted by coal-fired power plants doubles the risk of mortality compared to similar particles from other sources.
Based on Medicare and US pollution data from 1999 to 2020, researchers found that 460,000 deaths during that period were linked to such coal-induced pollution.
According to official data, coal accounted for 17% of US electricity generation last year.
