Cucumber buds are drying and falling off? You can save the harvest with one watering

What to do to avoid losing the harvest, explains “Glavred”.

Why cucumbers drop buds

When the plant forms the first fruits, it allocates most of the nutrients to them. If the root system cannot supply food to all the buds, some of them begin to yellow and fall off.

Which shoots and buds need to be removed

When planting cucumbers, in the first two leaf axils, both side shoots (suckers) and the first buds must be completely removed.

Starting from the third, as well as the fourth, fifth, and sixth leaf axils, the cucumbers themselves no longer need to be touched – the entire fruit load is left. Meanwhile, side shoots must be removed up to the fifth leaf.

The gardener advises not to overdo it by picking the lower fruits. There is a risk that the plant, having received no fruit load at the initial stage of its development, will begin to develop exclusively in a vegetative direction. Then we may see a large plant with large green leaves but very few fruits.

If the bush has already grown the first two cucumbers, it will try to give all its strength to them. Other buds will receive nutrients only on a residual basis. If nutrients are lacking, they may fall off.

What to fertilize cucumbers with so that buds do not fall off

If the bushes lack strength to develop, this may indicate a nitrogen deficiency. In this case, chicken manure infusion can be used. It contains nitrogen, as well as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other elements important for the plant.

If their development were more active, we would no longer use chicken manure with a higher nitrogen content, but now we would use fertilizers 20-20 or 18-18.

How to properly water cucumbers with chicken manure infusion

Usually, half a liter jar of prepared infusion is taken for 10 liters of water. For young or weakened plants, it is better to reduce the concentration to about 300 ml of infusion per bucket of water.

Before fertilizing, the soil must be slightly moist. The solution should be well mixed and each plant watered by pouring about 500–800 ml under the roots.

Such additional fertilization will help the plant strengthen, provide nutrients to young buds, and allow for a more abundant and higher quality cucumber harvest.
