“The expected agreement between Greenland, Denmark, and the United States is an important step in strengthening security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic,” G. Nausėda wrote on the social network “X” on Saturday.

He said he appreciates the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, Denmark, and Greenland’s prime ministers “in achieving this important agreement.”
“Closer transatlantic cooperation in these strategically important regions is essential for the security of Europe and the entire NATO alliance,” the president said.
As BNS reported, D. Trump announced on Friday that he had reached an agreement with Denmark granting Washington permanent security control over Greenland and blocking Russia and China from establishing bases in this Arctic territory.
Denmark and its autonomous territory Greenland welcomed the agreement and stated that it will be signed next week on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
However, the terms of the agreement are still unclear, although Denmark insists that its sovereignty remains intact.
In a released statement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the agreement “jointly recognizes the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.”
Returning to the White House in January 2025, D. Trump repeatedly stated that Washington needs to control Greenland for strategic reasons. This greatly unsettled NATO ally Denmark and provoked strong opposition from the Alliance.
