Loss in the Polish community of Lithuania – a famous poet of the Vilnius region has died

„Aleksandras Sniežko published 14 collections of poetry on lyrical, religious, and patriotic themes. He wrote for both adults and children.

He debuted in the Vilnius press in the sixth decade of the 20th century. He was a very popular author of songs that were gladly performed by Polish bands and folk ensembles in the Vilnius region.

He was also highly valued as a poetry translator. Among other authors, he translated the poetry of the famous Lithuanian poet Justinas Marcinkevičius into Polish,“ the portal reports.

The news of the loss was also shared by the Polish Embassy in Vilnius on its social networks.

„With deep sadness, I received the news of the death of Mr. Aleksandras Sniežko, who was a distinguished Polish poet and literary figure from the Vilnius region, a longtime secretary of the Polish Writers’ Section in the Lithuanian Writers’ Union, one of the founders of the Lithuanian Polish Writers’ Union, author of several volumes of poetry and song lyrics, and an active promoter of Polish culture and society in Lithuania,“ said the head of the embassy, Rafał Poborski, in a post.

He also noted that A. Sniežko was awarded the Honorary Badge “Meritorious for Polish Culture” and the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his contributions to the Lithuanian Polish community.

„He was a person deeply devoted to Polish culture, who left a profound mark on the cultural life of the Lithuanian Polish community through decades of his creative work and activity and will remain in the memory of future generations,“ wrote the head of the Polish Embassy in Lithuania, expressing condolences to the family and relatives.
