The Islamic Republic wants to tax ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and attacks vessels it accuses of trying to avoid the preferred route.
Late Thursday, the oil tanker Trend, flying the Togo flag, “was attacked and detained after a fire broke out on board,” the statement said, indicating that the ship tried to “sail illegally.”
Early Friday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) reported that the ship was hit by a “projectile of unknown origin” and that a fire broke out on board. It was later extinguished.

The agency also reported a “security incident” in the Strait of Hormuz late Thursday but did not provide details.
It is unclear whether the reports from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and UKMTO refer to the same incident.
