The road infrastructure company “Via Lietuva” has announced a public procurement competition aimed at updating the existing vehicle weighing technology and equipment. Upon project implementation, the selection of heavy vehicles for physical weighing will become automated.

This means that the system will itself identify and select vehicles that need to be directed to physical weighing, and drivers will be informed about the direction through the updated variable message sign system.
“With this project, we are moving towards a more modern and efficient vehicle control model. Automated selection will allow faster and more accurate determination of which vehicles require physical weighing, and the process itself will become smoother for both the specialists conducting the control and the traffic participants.

Updating not only technology but also infrastructure
During the project, the equipment of the existing weighing station on both sides of the A1 highway will be updated:
- at 301.88 km on the right side, towards Klaipėda;
- at 303.13 km on the left side, towards Vilnius.
During the renovation, the variable message sign system will also be updated. It will be an important part of the automated process – drivers will be informed about the need to proceed to the weighing station based on the information provided on road signs.
More automation for more efficient control
Automated vehicle selection will allow pre-identification of vehicles requiring physical inspection, making the weighing process more targeted.

The modernized system will also create conditions for more efficient use of the weighing station infrastructure and staff time, and vehicle directing will be carried out based on automated decisions.
“It is important that we are not just updating individual devices. We are creating an integrated solution where vehicle identification, selection, informing, and directing to physical weighing will operate as one system,” says M. Gedaminskas.
The contract scope also includes a 5-year equipment maintenance service, ensuring continuous technical support and reliable system operation.
The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration (LTSA), which also contributes financially to this implementation.
The contract with the winner of the public procurement competition is expected to be signed by the end of 2026. More precise implementation deadlines will be clarified after completing the procurement procedures and signing the contract.
