“Crosses and chapels are signs of the history and memory of our region, so it is especially important to preserve them. Recently, the chapel has been renovated and two new wooden crosses have been erected in the old cemetery of the Auksūdžiai village in the Darbėnai eldership. Soon, the renovation work of the chapel in the old cemetery of the Prystovai village in the Kūlupėnai eldership will also be completed. It is pleasing that the work in both cemeteries of the Kretinga district was carried out by our region’s folk artist, wood craftsman Antanas Lubys,” said Vaida Jakumienė, deputy mayor of Kretinga district.

6000 euros have been allocated from the Kretinga district municipality budget this year to renovate two chapels and erect a cross. The Cultural Heritage Department allocated funds – 1500 euros – to erect three more crosses.
“Three metal crosses were erected in the first old cemetery of Kurmaičiai village in the Kretinga eldership, in the old cemetery of Mišučiai village in the Žalgiris eldership, and in the second old cemetery of Kūlsodis village in the Kūlupėnai eldership,” said V. Jakumienė. “It was necessary to erect crosses in these chapels because until now there was no memorial sign there.”

Last year, the old chapels were renovated in the Akmenaliai village of the Darbėnai eldership and in the Sauseriai village of the Kūlupėnai eldership. 3000 euros were allocated from the Kretinga district municipality budget for this work.
