It was the first time in Lithuania’s independence history that the U20 girls’ team won a European Championship medal.
Asked about the upcoming U20 European Championship in Lithuania, team coach E. Ženevičius said:
“This is a new challenge that I am really looking forward to. The championship in Lithuania is an additional pressure that we are definitely not afraid of. The players accept it combatively and bravely.”
The U20 European Championship will take place from July 4–12 in Alytus and Klaipėda. The Lithuanian team will start their performance in Group A against the teams of Spain, Israel, and Croatia.
“These are serious teams. Our goal will be the same as last year – to win the next matches. Every match is very important and we do not look too far ahead. The championship is a very slippery thing, so concentration and serious work must prevail. Our subgroup is strong, but we ourselves are strong too,” said E. Ženevičius.
Seven players who defended the honor of Lithuania in the silver-winning European Championship will be able to play in this year’s championship as well.
Among them is Danielė Paunksnytė, who made it to the symbolic championship five. In the last group match against Israel, D. Paunksnytė scored 43 points and broke the all-time U20 European Championship record.
