As reported by tvpworld.com, this artifact, called a sword scabbard chape, is a protective metal fitting attached to the end of a sword scabbard and may have belonged to a medieval warrior. The find was discovered during searches in the Mazovia region in central and northern Poland, the regional heritage protection service announced on social media on Monday.

According to the service, the chape most likely dates back to the 11th century, making it considered “extremely rare” of this type of find in Poland.

What makes the discovery even more exceptional is that the chape was found “very close to the surface, practically right at the ground level.”

Despite the artifact being found very shallowly, after about 1000 years in the ground it remained in “surprisingly good condition,” added the heritage protection service specialists.
The find will now be further studied. Researchers say it may provide new insights into weaponry and material culture in early medieval Poland.
