From September, some residents will pay less for electricity: who can take advantage of the benefit

The vast majority of them – 159 thousand – switched to this tariff in August, implementing the changes prepared by the Ministry of Energy for vulnerable electricity consumers transitioning to public supply.

“The most important thing is that the protection provided by the state for vulnerable consumers works in practice – people who are entitled to pay less for electricity can actually benefit from it. In 2026, a vulnerable consumer using the right to public supply, consuming on average about 119 kWh of electricity per month, could save about 86 euros per year compared to offers from independent electricity suppliers,” says Minister of Energy Lukas Savickas.

It is important to note that the amount saved by a specific consumer may vary depending on their electricity consumption, chosen plan, and household needs.

The increase in the number of vulnerable consumers was caused by the entry into force of legal amendments and the application of special pricing for vulnerable consumers in public supply. From July 1, a 20 ct/kWh “Standard” single time zone tariff is applied to vulnerable consumers.

A new procedure for informing vulnerable consumers and transferring them from independent suppliers to public supply has been implemented. It facilitates consumers for whom the public supply price is more favorable to more easily take advantage of this opportunity.

Vulnerable consumers are considered to be residents who receive or are entitled to receive financial social assistance for low-income residents, persons with disabilities, as well as those receiving social old-age pensions or social compensation. The Ministry of Energy reminds that a separate electricity supply is not created for vulnerable consumers – they use public supply, but a special electricity price approved by the National Energy Regulatory Council is applied to them, which changes every six months.
