In a report released on Thursday about how the illegal use of “Claude” was prevented in several countries, Anthropic stated that they “identified a threat actor group based in northern Yemen conducting three weapons development programs.”

This group used the “Claude” system to create software for air weapon targeting, navigation, and control. Otherwise, it would have required a team of engineers.
“We have no evidence that these actors managed to test a functioning device, but they did conduct a test launch of a guided missile,” Anthropic said. “As we understand it, this test failed: within hours, the actors returned to Claude to figure out why it failed.”

Anthropic said it blocked the relevant accounts as soon as it detected illegal activity. Although the company did not disclose who these actors were, it is likely related to the Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen, including the capital Sana’a.
