More than 700 children attend Kervekiulos Primary School, located very close to Tartu. Although the government decree stipulates that from the 2026–2027 school year, lessons in Estonian general education schools should start at 9 a.m., Kervekiulos School took advantage of an exception and maintained the decades-old practice of starting lessons at 8 a.m.

“We are a sparsely populated area where Kervekiulos School is not just a local community school – children come to it from many different parts of the municipality,” said Tartu Deputy Mayor Agu Laas.

According to him, to delay the start time of lessons, public transport schedules would have to be changed, which would be difficult and, most importantly, expensive.
