In the Šalčininkai district, near the state border with Belarus, a World War II-era combat grenade was found. A local farmer reported this to the Purvėnai border guard post watchman.
On Tuesday evening, the watchman of the Purvėnai border guard post of the VSAT Varėna border unit received a report from a farmer who found an explosive in his cultivated field.
It was decided to neutralize the grenade found by the farmer on site.
The man suspected that he had found an old combat grenade.
The location of the find is 1,300 m from the state border with Belarus.
Purvėnai border guards immediately began to secure this location and the surrounding area, later replaced by officers of the Vilnius County Police.

As usual in such cases, the “Shield” plan was implemented. Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit of the Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion of the Lithuanian Armed Forces arrived and determined that the find was a World War II-era Soviet F-1 hand grenade.
After examining it, it was decided to neutralize the grenade on site.
- The Soviet F-1 hand grenade is an anti-personnel defensive explosive projectile. It was created based on the French F1 grenade and contains 60 g of explosive charge.
- The total weight with the detonator is about 600 g. Due to its shape and yellow-green color, it is nicknamed “lemon” (or “limonka”).
Even after lying on the ground for more than 80 years, rusted, it can still be deadly dangerous, the VSAT statement notes.
