Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s airspace has been closed, so leaders and officials visiting Kyiv usually travel by train.
This is the first visit to Kyiv by businessman S. Witkoff, a friend of President Donald Trump, and J. Kushner since the Republican returned to the US presidency last January, promising to quickly end this war.
On Saturday, US envoys discussed “fundamental plans” for further steps to end the war in Ukraine during a meeting with the Russian president that lasted more than three hours, the White House reported.
“Both sides discussed fundamental plans for further steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and expect no less productive meetings tomorrow in Ukraine,” the statement said.
Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov called the talks “extremely open” and said the Americans “presented various ideas about possible paths to an agreement,” but did not provide further details.
Russian representatives told the Americans that Moscow is “confident” it can achieve its military goals and occupy the remaining part of Eastern Ukraine, Ushakov added.

According to him, Moscow provided its “detailed assessment” of the situation on the Ukrainian battlefield, but the conversation was not focused solely on the Russian invasion.
“Economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects between Russia and the US were discussed quite thoroughly,” he said.
D. Trump earlier told journalists that both negotiators will seek to assess whether progress toward peace in this conflict is possible.
Diplomatic efforts are stalled – partly due to Washington’s war with Iran, while Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range attacks, causing civilian casualties to rise to levels unseen since the start of hostilities.
Both Russia and Ukraine promised not to attack each other’s capitals for three days to allow these talks to take place. However, overnight into Sunday, both sides exchanged attacks, and one person was killed in Ukraine.
