The mother of volunteer soldier Artūras Sakalauskas, Genovaitė Sakalauskienė, has died

At the age of 27, Artūras Sakalauskas joined the Volunteer National Defense Service in January 1991, actively fought against Soviet aggression, stood guard in the Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas building, as well as at volunteer posts in Kaunas, Sitkūnai. On August 19, 1991, he, together with volunteers from the Alytus unit, again stood to defend the parliament.

On August 21, 1991, during the collapse of the coup in Moscow, a clash occurred between Lithuanian volunteers and soldiers of the Soviet special forces unit near the Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas building during a Soviet army provocation.

They broke into the territory guarded by soldier volunteers by car near the first post on A. Goštautas Street. During the resistance, A. Sakalauskas was killed, and two other volunteers from the Alytus unit were injured.

After his death, A. Sakalauskas was awarded the Order of the Cross of Vytis, First Class, the January 13 Commemorative Medal, and the Lithuanian Army Volunteer Creators’ Medal.
