On Friday, the gates of Burning Man were closed due to mud in the Black Rock Desert. The organizers closed the entrance gates and asked arrivals to keep their distance until the rain that fell early Friday morning dried up.

During the closure, event organizers asked arriving participants to stay in the city of Reno and not to travel north until the gates were reopened. They also urged those already in the temporary city not to use vehicles. The persistent rain soaked the desert dust, making movement very difficult. Some festival visitors wrapped their shoes in plastic bags while walking around the city.
Participants dubbed this event the “Mud Man.” Videos from the event turned into a mud pit began spreading on social media. Visitors and commentators did not hide their disappointment.
“This whole experience looks absolutely pathetic,” wrote one commentator.
“Burning Man year after year seems like the absolute worst thing to go to,” added another internet user.

“This is a message from the universe to stop this event,” said another social media user.
By around 2 p.m. local time on Friday, many roads had dried enough for people to walk easily, although cycling was still difficult. Event organizers confirmed that the burning ceremonies of several large wooden art installations, including a huge Titanic model, remain scheduled as planned.
Gate closures due to bad weather at the Burning Man festival are a common occurrence. Entry was also temporarily halted on September 3 due to a rising dust storm.
