Data collected during the pre-trial investigation reasonably suggests that B. Mikutavičius fatally injured a woman born in 2003 on December 4, 2025, with a stabbing-cutting tool, who died from the injuries sustained.
Soon after, a woman born in 2001 was also fatally injured.
The man was served a notice of suspicion for these two criminal acts under Article 129, Part 1 of the Criminal Code (CC). The penalty for this is imprisonment from seven to fifteen years.
Considering the data collected during the pre-trial investigation, the qualification of the suspicion brought against B. Mikutavičius for one of the two incriminated criminal acts did not change. For the other criminal act, the suspicion was requalified under Article 129, Part 2, Point 6 of the CC.
Thus, it was established that the suspect killed one of the girls by torturing or otherwise extremely cruelly. This is punishable by imprisonment from eight to twenty years or life imprisonment.
Behind bars for 9 months already
On September 2, by the decision of the Kaunas District Court, the suspect’s detention was extended for a period of 3 months. We remind that the person has been held in custody since December 7 of last year.
The pre-trial investigation is organized and controlled by the First Criminal Prosecution Division of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office, and the investigation is conducted by the 2nd Division of the Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the Criminal Police of the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat.
The pre-trial investigation is currently not completed. The Prosecutor’s Office reports that after the pre-trial investigation is completed and the case is transferred to the court, the public will be informed.
Killed cousin and real estate broker

Mikutavičius, born in 1996, originally from Žygaičiai in Tauragė district but living in Kaunas for the past few years and unemployed before detention, is suspected of cold-bloodedly killing two young women last December 4 – his cousin (at her own home) and a real estate broker (who came to show a rental apartment), born in 2003 and 2001 respectively.
Both murdered girls were found in locked apartments when their relatives reported them missing. Both victims’ bodies showed stab and cut wounds.
A public and widespread search for the fugitive B. Mikutavičius ensued.
While hiding, the suspect constantly changed his appearance, changed clothes – initially in photos taken in public places he wore a green jacket, later a black jacket, wore glasses, and at the time of arrest he was wearing a red jacket.

It is estimated that about 1000 people searched for B. Mikutavičius.
Finally, the suspect was arrested on the evening of December 5 by representatives of a civic society.
After the people of Kaunas demonstrated unity, courage, and active actions by catching B. Mikutavičius, suspected of the armed murder of two girls last December, a discussion arose about manifestations of a “lynch mob.” It was suggested that citizens might have used excessive force during the arrest. A video quickly spread on social networks showing B. Mikutavičius, who was on the ground, searched, and not resisting, being hit on the head.
Lying on the ground and trying to cover his face, he begged the crowd to spare him.
Eventually, the discussions subsided, but the police officer’s actions during the arrest began to be evaluated. An internal investigation revealed that the officer exceeded his authority.
The internal investigation found that the officer used force – physical power – disproportionately and without legal grounds.
On February 10, 2026, by order of the Chief of the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, the officer was given an official reprimand.
Expert examination conducted
At the court hearing for the preventive measure, the suspect did not deny his guilt and spoke little.
B. Mikutavičius underwent a psychiatric examination to determine whether he understood what he was doing at the time of the crimes and whether he would be able to stand trial.
After several months of investigation, experts concluded that the suspect could understand the nature of his actions and control them at the time of the crime, so he can participate in the process and serve the sentence.
The experts’ conclusion determined whether B. Mikutavičius would be sent to prison or to a hospital for compulsory treatment.
