Implementing the European Union (EU) co-financed project “Ensuring uninterrupted 5G connectivity in the ‘Via Baltica’ transport corridor” aims to improve the experience of road users by ensuring continuous 5G connectivity along the entire route and to strengthen our country’s state road infrastructure in preparation for autonomous vehicle traffic in the future. Similar infrastructure is being installed in the “Via Baltica” corridor in Latvia and Estonia.

The company “Via Lietuva” is responsible for building the towers on which 5G connectivity equipment will be installed and operated by project partners, telecommunications companies “Telia Lietuva” and “Tele2”. Among the works planned for contractors in the public procurement are additional infrastructure installations near the towers: fenced areas necessary for equipment operation and electrical connections.
To enable operators’ 5G connectivity equipment to be connected to fiber optic communication, optical cable lines must be brought to the sites of the planned towers. This project phase is planned to be implemented in cooperation with fiber optic providers – they would be given the opportunity to lay optical lines at their own expense, which could then be used for service provision.
“We invite companies operating optical cables and fiber optic providers to cooperate and contribute to the strategic EU 5G connectivity development project in one of the main transport corridors connecting the Baltic countries. By offering to lay communication cables in the territory of state roads, we can ensure easier project implementation compared to works on private plots, as only the consent of ‘Via Lietuva’ is required for this.

For interested providers, this is a business development opportunity, as there is a lot of public and private infrastructure near state roads that requires internet connectivity – cafes, gas stations, some industrial buildings, so owners of communication cables will have much more direct access to potential customers,” says Justas Norbutas, Head of the Infrastructure Group at “Via Lietuva”.
“Via Lietuva” is organizing a project presentation for interested providers, which will take place on September 7 at 10 a.m. at the company’s office, located at Kauno g. 22, Vilnius. During the meeting, planned tower locations, construction scope, and cooperation conditions will be presented, and there will also be a discussion with potential partners.
“We aim to involve market participants in advance and jointly find the most suitable solutions for the implementation of this project. We expect constructive dialogue with providers and their insights regarding the planned cooperation model,” says the representative of “Via Lietuva”.
