Early on Friday evening, officers of the Neringa Border Guard Station of the Coastal Border Guard Unit of VSAT detected a border violator in the Curonian Lagoon using a technical surveillance system. A windsurfer was seen moving quickly towards the border section, near the first state border buoy.

The patrol boat crew of “Boomeranger C1100-017” was informed about this. It was established that the windsurfer entered about 200 m into Russian territorial waters and soon returned.

A few minutes after the incident was reported, the patrol boat crew detained the man windsurfing near the Parnidis dune in the lagoon. The border guards brought the violator with the windsurfing board to the Nida river port.

A 56-year-old man from Vilnius also illegally crossed the state border and entered Russian territory.

Administrative proceedings were initiated against him for violating the legal regime regulating the border and for illegal crossing of the state border due to negligence. For one violation, the law provides for a warning or a fine of 40–90 euros, for another – a warning or a fine of 70–140 euros.

After the interrogation, the windsurfer was released, being given a notice to come to the Neringa Border Guard Station in a few days when his administrative offense cases will be reviewed.
