When and at what temperature to plant tulips?
It is not advisable to rush to plant tulips at the beginning of autumn. It is best to follow the weather conditions and soil temperature. Bulbs should be planted when the ground has cooled sufficiently but has not yet frozen.
Tulips need to form a root system before the onset of permanent frosts. Therefore, planting can be done as long as the soil is still suitable for digging and cultivation.
How to choose the most suitable location?
Tulips grow best in a well-lit, sunny spot where water does not accumulate. They should not be planted in low areas where moisture collects after rain or snowmelt.
Excessive water can increase the risk of bulb rot.
How to prepare the soil and fertilize?
Tulip bulbs already contain nutrients, so a large amount of fertilizer does not necessarily mean more abundant flowering. If the soil is poor, well-rotted compost can be added before planting.
However, concentrated fertilizers should not be placed directly into the planting hole – they can damage the roots forming after planting.
Planting depth and proper bulb arrangement
The hole should be about 2–3 times deeper than the height of the bulb itself. For most tulips, a depth of about 10–15 cm is suitable, but the exact depth depends on the bulb size and soil type.

In light, sandy soil, bulbs can be planted a little deeper, while in heavier, clay soil – closer to the surface.
When planting, it is important to place the bulb correctly: the pointed end should face upwards, and the flat part downwards.
Watering and mulching before winter
The planted bed can be watered if the soil is dry. This will help the bulbs settle better with the soil and encourage rooting.
Later, the need for watering depends on weather conditions. If autumn is dry, the soil can be slightly moistened, but additional watering is not necessary in rainy weather.
Before winter, the bed can be mulched with a layer of about 5–7 cm of dry leaves, straw, or other suitable material. Mulch helps protect the soil from sudden temperature fluctuations and maintains more stable conditions for the bulbs.
The most important thing is not to plant tulips too early, not to overwater, and not to over-fertilize. Properly planted bulbs will have time to root before winter and will have good conditions to start growing and flowering in spring.
