A. Karis emphasized that Estonia already has a prepared military reserve and defense union.
“Anything can happen, but we must be prepared for any course of events. This preparedness is extremely important. We have done a lot in this area: we have a well-prepared military reserve and defense union. However, probably one of our weak points is the preparedness of the civilian population. We lack shelters and other necessary things. In this matter, we could learn from Ukraine,” said the politician.
He noted that currently Russia is in a very weak position.
“But no one knows what will happen in 5, 10, or 15 years. I always give the example of the period before the Second World War. At that time, we had a great army, but we were alone, without allies,” said A. Karis.
The Estonian leader emphasized that today the country is a NATO member, so its position is quite different from what it was before the Second World War.
He also spoke about the hybrid threats posed by Russia, which, according to him, have existed for a long time.
“Hybrid threats have existed for quite a long time. Therefore, we established appropriate centers in Estonia. Cybersecurity was one of such issues back in 2007. At that time, we began to convince others that this is also part of the war. Now the NATO Cyber Defense Center operates in Estonia, in which Ukraine also participates. So we are also prepared in this area, but we are not only talking about cybersecurity. There is a shadow fleet and many other threats. False news can also be included among them,” summarized A.
