“Constant military pressure eventually forced the remaining pirates to leave the ship,” it added.

“Later, forces secured the ship ‘MV LATUF’ and it safely resumed its journey,” the government noted.

The website “Marine Traffic” shows that the ship sailing under the Cameroonian flag departed Turkey at the end of July and was heading to the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

International media reports mentioned that the ship was carrying Turkish weapons.

The news agency AFP contacted Somali federal authorities, but they did not confirm this information.

This joint operation by Turkey and Somalia was conducted under a bilateral defense cooperation agreement.

At the beginning of this century, piracy off the Somali coast was widespread, and in 2011 pirate activity reached its peak until they were curbed by deploying international naval forces and implementing new commercial shipping protection measures.

However, since April, attacks have increased again – at least five cargo ships have been hijacked, the latest of which was seized on August 20 off the coast of Yemen.
