Scientists have created a purple fabric that cools in the sun

Capable of reflecting sunlight

Researchers from Zhengzhou University and the University of Adelaide have developed an innovative purple fabric that can reflect up to 87.6% of sunlight.

During testing, the temperature of the new material was several degrees lower than that of white cotton and conventional purple fabric.

The research results were published in the scientific journal “Small”.

Typically, white color is used to create cooling clothes because it reflects sunlight best. Dark fabrics, on the contrary, attract heat.

Creating a purple item with the same properties is a true engineering achievement.

Electrospinning technology and heat radiation into space

To ensure the desired effect, scientists used electrospinning technology and created fibers with zinc oxide nanoparticles and metal-organic compounds.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles are responsible for proper light reflection, while metal-organic compounds give the material its purple color.

A similar fabric not only repels sunlight but also effectively dissipates 96.4% of absorbed heat in the mid-infrared radiation range.

This energy is removed directly into outer space, thus continuously cooling the body surface.

In direct sunlight, the temperature of the new fabric was 4.2 °C lower than white cotton and 6.2 °C lower than conventional purple fabric.

During the experiment, simulating human skin, the new material allowed reducing its temperature by 8 °C. For comparison, white cotton reduced the temperature by 4.6 °C, and conventional purple fabric by 2.8 °C.

Future prospects and application to other shades

The material proved to be lightweight and flexible, it allows water vapor to pass through and maintains stretchability.

After 50 washing cycles, it retained its cooling properties. Tests also showed that ultraviolet radiation practically did not change the optical characteristics of the fabric.

The authors of the study believe that the developed technology can be applied to create cooling fabrics of other colors.

In the future, such materials could be used to make clothing for people who spend a lot of time in the sun, including athletes and outdoor workers.
