Photographer, filmmaker, and educator died on August 27.
The photographer’s friend and colleague, member of the Lithuanian Journalists’ Union Algimantas Barzdžius, remembers A. Zinkevičius as one of his first photography teachers. Their acquaintance began around 1980, when A. Barzdžius was just starting his path as a photographer.
“I still didn’t know much, I was searching for a lot, and beside me was a person from whom I could learn not only technique but also the most important things – seeing and thinking,” wrote A. Barzdžius.
According to him, in long conversations about photography, cinema, and psychological portraiture, A. Zinkevičius emphasized that it is not enough to simply photograph a person – it is important to reveal them, to convey their personality and character.
A. Zinkevičius became interested in photography and cinema back in the 1960s. From 1964 to 1966, he worked as a cameraman at the “KPI film” studio, from 1966 he was a member of the Kaunas branch of the Lithuanian Amateur Cinema Society, later becoming the responsible secretary of this branch.
Since 1969, A. Zinkevičius belonged to the Kaunas photo club. For a decade, he led the children’s photography group at the Kaunas Trade Unions Cultural Palace and was also the chairman of the photo club. Since 1978, he was a member of the International Non-Professional Cinema Association UNICA.

The photographer worked in the ELTA photography production department, organized personal photography exhibitions, created educational films, and collaborated with the press and television. He studied photography and cinema at the Moscow University of Culture.
A. Zinkevičius’s creative legacy will continue to be available to the public. In 2025, the Lithuanian Central State Archives (LCVA) accepted the authorial films created by the photographer – more than 100 reels of 16 mm film.
They capture images of Kaunas and other Lithuanian cities and places around the world, various events and happenings since 1964. The archive plans to digitize, describe, and publish A. Zinkevičius’s creative legacy publicly on the “e-kinas” portal.
A. Zinkevičius’s remains will be laid out on August 29, Saturday, at 1 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Church’s funeral hall (Krėvės St. 95A). Mass for the deceased will be held on Sunday at 9 a.m., and the urn will be taken to Panemunė Cemetery at 12 p.m.
