UK King Charles III mourns his “dear cousin” King Harald of Norway and paid tribute to the “distinguished personality” who led his country with “warmth and humility.”

“With deepest sadness, my wife and I learned of the death of my dear cousin, King Harald V of Norway,” said the UK monarch in a statement.
“King Harald served his nation for 35 years with unwavering dedication, leading Norway with warmth and humility during times of great change,” he added.
Sweden
“Both as a head of state and as a successful athlete, he was an excellent representative of his country. He gave ‘Everything for Norway’,” said King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, referring to Harald’s royal motto.
Denmark
King Frederik of Denmark said the late monarch was an “extraordinary man” who “combined duty and responsibility with presence and compassion.”
France
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed deep sorrow over the death of King Harald V of Norway and praised the monarch’s contribution to Paris-Oslo relations.
Harald “worked tirelessly throughout his reign to strengthen the ties uniting Norway and France,” Macron wrote on “X,” recalling the “warm welcome” during his visit to Oslo in June 2025.
NATO
“He showed himself to be a dedicated leader,” wrote Mark Rutte, head of the NATO alliance, which includes Norway, online.
“Due to his own military roots, he became a supporter of the Norwegian armed forces and a long-time friend of NATO,” said M. Rutte.
European Union
European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said Harald V “served his country with warmth, humility, and an unbreakable sense of duty.”
“He was a true European and served his nation throughout his life,” wrote U. von der Leyen.
Israel
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also expressed condolences on the death of King Harald of Norway, who supported the historic Oslo agreements between Israel and the Palestinians early in his reign.
“King Harald V, who loved his people and was beloved by them, served his country faithfully and devotedly as king for more than 35 years,” wrote I. Herzog, who mostly holds a ceremonial role, on social media, adding he is deeply saddened.
Netherlands
The Dutch royal family expressed sadness on Friday over the death of King Harald of Norway, recalling trips with him around Oslo and the rest of the country.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. We cherish the memory of our special friendship with him in our hearts. King Harald served his country with love, pride, and conviction,” the family statement said.
Spain
The Spanish royal family also expressed sadness over the death of the Norwegian king, whom they praised as an “example of responsibility, dignity, simplicity, and tireless dedication to service (to his country).”
“With respect and admiration for him, as well as deep sadness, we express our condolences” on the king’s death, they wrote on social media.
Belgium
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium expressed great sadness on Friday over the death of the Norwegian king, saying his “humor, humanity, and sincerity made him a truly special person.”
“Entire generations of Norwegians grew up with him. For decades, he was a familiar and reassuring figure, a beacon of stability for his country. He fulfilled his role with unwavering dedication, loyalty, and dignity,” their statement said.
Italy
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Harald “a monarch who served his people calmly, authoritatively, and with a deep sense of institutional duty, helping to strengthen ties between Norway and Italy throughout his long reign” in a post on “X.”
Switzerland
Swiss President Guy Parmelin wrote on “X” that Harald “will be remembered for strong leadership and devoted service to his country.”
