Relations between Russia and Romania have deteriorated since 2022, when the large-scale war in Ukraine began.

In May, this NATO member accused Russia of launching a drone that hit an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați, but Russia denied this accusation.
In July, Romania expelled a Russian diplomat over drone incursions.
“The Romanian chargé d’affaires (…) was handed a note from the ministry declaring an employee of the Romanian embassy in Moscow persona non grata,” the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
“This measure is a response to the previous, unfounded decision by the Romanian side to declare an employee of the Russian embassy in Bucharest persona non grata,” the ministry added.

The drone incident in May, which injured two people, sparked outrage among Romania and its NATO and EU allies.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, dozens of drone incursions have been recorded in Romania, but previously no residential buildings had been hit.
