The Court of Appeal dismissed the complaint of a Russian citizen accused of terrorism regarding detention

The detention of E. Salmanov, living in Estonia, was extended for three months by the Vilnius District Court in mid-August.

As reported by BNS, according to prosecutor Šarūnas Astrauskas, if a milder preventive measure is applied to this accused, he may flee or hide from the court.

E. Salmanov’s lawyer requested not to extend the detention and to apply a milder preventive measure. During the hearing, he asked his client what the maximum amount he could provide as bail was. The accused said the maximum amount is 40 thousand euros.

As BNS wrote, charges were brought against Lithuanian citizen Aleksandras Šuranovas, Ukrainian citizens Vadym Borsuk and Vasilij Kovač, Daniil Jencius, who holds dual Russian and Lithuanian citizenship, and Russian citizen E. Salmanov for incendiary devices sent abroad via DHL and DPD courier services.

They are accused of a terrorist act and participation in an organized terrorist group whose goal is to commit terrorist crimes.

In July 2024, four parcels were sent from Lithuania to the United Kingdom (UK) and Poland.

Two parcels arrived by air transport at a sorting center in Germany, where they were distributed for further transportation. One of them caught fire at Leipzig airport just before being loaded onto the plane, the second caught fire in a warehouse in the UK.

The parcel delivered to Poland caught fire in the truck transporting it, the fourth parcel, transported by DPD cargo land transport, did not catch fire due to a device malfunction and was seized by officers. Upon examination, a triggering mechanism was found and the danger was assessed.

According to the indictment, the fire in the UK caused nearly 400 thousand euros in damage, in Germany – 126 thousand euros, in Poland – nearly 62 thousand euros.

According to officials, the mentioned accused are executors, intermediaries. It was established that the crimes were organized by the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the Russian Armed Forces.
